The Art of Transcription

Works by Debussy, Schoenberg and Mozart are given new life on this program featuring arrangements of their music for small chamber ensembles. Strings and winds are added to Debussy’s beloved piano piece Clair de lune in an arrangement by American composer Margaret Brouwer, and Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony, a core work of the SPCO repertoire, is performed in an arrangement by his pupil Anton Webern, which elucidates the contrapuntal textures of this early 20th century work. The program closes with a transcription of Mozart’s glorious Sinfonia concertante for string sextet by an unknown but clearly gifted arranger.
